Meet Dr. Smart
Being an orthodontist is more than just a job to me; it’s a calling and a passion. It means having the opportunity to transform lives daily by creating beautiful, healthy smiles. My profession allows me to blend art and science, utilizing advanced techniques and technologies to achieve remarkable results. Every day, I am driven by the desire to improve my patients’ self-confidence, oral health, and overall well-being. It’s incredibly fulfilling to know that my work can have such a profound and lasting impact on people’s lives.
Working with a diverse range of patients every day enriches my life in countless ways. Each patient brings their own story, challenges, and goals, making my work dynamic and rewarding. I cherish the personal connections I build with my patients and their families. These relationships deepen my empathy, improve my communication skills, and keep me grounded. The variety in my patient base ensures that no two days are ever the same, and I am constantly learning and growing both professionally and personally. The joy and satisfaction I see in my patients as they progress through their treatment inspires me and reinforce my love for this profession.
One of the aspects of my work that excites me the most is the transformative power of a beautiful smile. Witnessing the boost in confidence and happiness that a new smile brings to my patients is incredibly rewarding. Each time a patient looks in the mirror and sees their new smile for the first time, it’s a powerful reminder of why I love what I do.
Education
I graduated with honors from California Lutheran University in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology before attending the UCLA School of Dentistry, receiving numerous academic and clinical awards. An elected member of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon national dental honor society, I graduated Suma Cum Laude with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1996.
I then spent two additional years at UCLA receiving specialty training in orthodontics. This specialty training focused heavily on craniofacial growth and development as well as all aspects of orthodontic theory and practice.
Continual Learning
I’m particularly interested in integrating the latest advancements in digital imaging technology, which allows for precise treatment planning, enhanced accuracy of treatments, and a more comfortable experience for my patients.
Another area that truly excites me is the development of clear aligner therapy, such as Invisalign®. These advancements offer effective treatment options that are less noticeable and more convenient, providing a great alternative to traditional braces.
To enhance my stills and further my knowledge, I am active in several professional organizations that provide ample opportunities for continuing education:
- American Association of Orthodontists
- Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists
- Washington State Dental Association
- Pierce County Dental Association
